This session provides a focused overview of tobacco and nicotine use, including the evolving landscape of vaping and electronic nicotine delivery systems. Aligned with the ACAAM National Addiction Medicine Didactic Curriculum and ABPM content areas, the session examines the epidemiology, neurobiology, assessment, and treatment of nicotine use disorder, as well as current harm reduction approaches and emerging issues related to nicotine products.

• Epidemiology and patterns of tobacco and nicotine use
 • The evolution of tobacco products and emerging nicotine delivery technologies
 • Neurobiology of nicotine, including dependence, intoxication, and withdrawal
 • Screening and assessment of nicotine use disorder
 • Pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment approaches for nicotine dependence
 • Harm reduction strategies related to tobacco and nicotine use
 • Regulatory considerations and ongoing controversies surrounding vaping and electronic nicotine products

How This Resource Is Used

This session is designed for on-demand learning, focused content review, and board preparation. It may be used to reinforce foundational addiction medicine concepts, supplement fellowship training, or support preparation for addiction medicine certification examinations. Learners can engage with specific topic areas independently or complete the full session as part of a structured study plan.

Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program | Southern Hills Hospital & Medical  Center | HCA Healthcare GME

Maureen Strohm, MD FAAFP DFASAM

Dr. Strohm is a family physician and addiction medicine specialist who serves as the founding Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at HCA Sunrise Health GME Consortium in Las Vegas. She has led the development of graduate medical education programs in family and addiction medicine and has extensive experience in training physicians in the care of substance use disorders.

Her work focuses on medical education and the delivery of comprehensive, patient‑centered care grounded in the biopsychosocial model, particularly for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.

 

Terrence Sanvictores, DO

Dr. Sanvictores is an Addiction Medicine Fellow at Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas. He completed his Family Medicine Residency at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His clinical interests include management of addictions with co-occurring psychiatric disorders, working with veteran populations, and emerging drug supply issues.
