Video Summary
The session introduces ACAM’s Faculty Development Series, moderated by Tim Brennan and hosted by Julie Beiler in conversation with Dr. Anora Englender, a professor at Oregon Health and Science University and founder of IMPACT (Improving Addiction Care Team), a national model for hospital-based addiction care.

Dr. Englender describes how her work began in hospital medicine, where she saw repeated failures in care transitions for patients with chronic illness and substance use disorders. A pivotal moment came after the death of a young patient with severe addiction-related complications, which pushed her to advocate for a better system. She first developed C-TRAIN, a transitional care innovation, and then built IMPACT based on patient needs assessments.

IMPACT was designed around what patients said they wanted: addiction treatment started in the hospital, access to medications, better community linkage, and support from peers due to mistrust of healthcare. The team grew to include an addiction physician, social work, peers, and community partners. Funding was secured by combining patient stories, quality data, and a strong business case focused on hospital length of stay and system costs.

Key lessons included the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork, understanding hospital power dynamics, building trust with leadership, and tailoring the message to what stakeholders care about.
