This session described how University of Illinois Chicago and Cook County Hospital built community-based addiction medicine rotations for internal medicine residents to meet new ACGME requirements and improve addiction training. Residents also complete self-directed learning and reflections.<br /><br />The speakers emphasized key goals: decreasing stigma, improving understanding of patients’ communities, strengthening clinical skills, and increasing willingness to treat substance use disorders. They also discussed challenges, including paperwork for correctional or credentialed sites, safety concerns, logistical coordination, supervision requirements, and protecting community partners and patients from burden or harm.<br /><br />Early evaluation showed residents report greater knowledge, improved comfort with buprenorphine and referrals, better understanding of patient barriers, and increased interest in addiction medicine fellowship. Overall, the panel presented addiction rotations as a practical way to integrate required training into residency while expanding compassionate, community-informed care.
