This session provides a focused overview of drug testing in addiction medicine, emphasizing practical interpretation, clinical application, and the effective use of testing results to support patient care. Aligned with the ACAAM National Addiction Medicine Didactic Curriculum and ABPM content areas, the session examines commonly used drug testing modalities, approaches to result interpretation, factors affecting test accuracy, and the integration of findings into clinical decision-making and treatment planning.

• Interpretation of urine drug screens, including metabolism of commonly used substances
• Common pitfalls in drug testing and factors that influence detection windows and accuracy
• Use of point-of-care and confirmatory testing strategies

• Practical approaches to interpreting results and supporting patient care through case-based examples

How This Resource Is Used

This session is designed for on-demand learning, focused content review, and board preparation. It may be used to reinforce foundational addiction medicine concepts, supplement fellowship training, or support preparation for addiction medicine certification examinations. Learners can engage with specific topic areas independently or complete the full session as part of a structured study plan.

	Valerie Carrejo, MD, FAAFP FASAM Dr. Carrejo is the Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of New Mexico and a family medicine physician specializing in addiction medicine. She is board certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Her clinical work focuses on the evaluation and treatment of substance use disorders, with an emphasis on integrating addiction care into primary care settings.
	Noah Jordahl, MD Dr. Jordahl is an Addiction Medicine Fellow at the University of New Mexico and an emergency medicine physician. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Utah and previously practiced in Shiprock, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation. His clinical interests include the treatment of substance use disorders, harm reduction, drug policy, emergency department–initiated addiction treatment, and the social determinants of health.
	Sarah Stroup, MD Dr. Stroup is an Addiction Medicine Fellow at the University of New Mexico. She recently completed her Family Medicine residency at the University of New Mexico, where she developed an interest in addiction medicine and caring for patients with substance use disorders. Her clinical interests include integrating addiction treatment into primary care and expanding access to evidence-based care for patients with substance use disorders.
